How Ice Cream Scoops Are Made: Inside the Die-Casting Process
Step 1 — Melting and dosing
Food-grade aluminum alloy ingot melts at around 660 °C; we hold the melt at 640–700 °C in the furnace beside the press. A dosing ladle meters the exact shot weight per scoop — over-dosing creates flash, under-dosing creates cold shuts.
Step 2 — Die casting (40–60 seconds per cycle)
The two mold halves close and the shot is injected at high pressure. The result is a one-piece scoop — bowl, neck, handle — with no welds. This is the structural difference from cheap assembled scoops: a seam across the neck is the classic failure point when levering frozen ice cream.
Step 3 — Trimming and finishing
Each casting carries a gate and overflow wells, trimmed immediately while warm. Edges are deburred, then the piece tumbles or hand-polishes depending on finish: mirror polish for plated zinc, satin for coated aluminum.
Step 4 — Coating (color programs)
Powder or liquid coating bakes onto the aluminum. This is where brand colors live — and where compliance lives too (see our FDA/LFGB primer). Coating thickness, adhesion and food-contact safety are lot-tested.
Step 5 — QC and packing
| Check | Method | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Seam/cold-shut visual | 100% visual at trim | No visible shut lines |
| Bowl roundness/balance | Gauge + spin check | AQL 2.5 |
| Coating adhesion | Cross-hatch tape test | No coating lift |
| Handle torque | Loaded twist test | No deformation at 5,000 cycles |
| Food-contact (coating) | Lab per formulation | FDA/LFGB pass |
Why this matters to buyers
When a factory controls casting, finishing, coating and QC on one site, problems trace to a lot within hours. That is the practical meaning of 'vertically integrated' — and why we publish our audit report number rather than just the SGS logo.
Frequently asked questions
How many scoops can one mold produce?
Well-maintained aluminum die-cast molds run for hundreds of thousands of cycles; we schedule maintenance and record shot counts per mold under our ISO 9001 system.
Can I visit the factory?
Yes — we host factory tours in Jiangmen; remote live video audits are also available.
What is the cycle time per scoop?
Roughly 40–60 seconds per shot depending on size and press tonnage.
